Vegetable ivory
"Phytelephas aecuatorialis" is the scientific name for vegetable ivory also known as "corozo"
In fact, vegetable ivory is the seed of a palm tree that grows only in Ecuador, Panama, and Colombia . It is a beautiful seed that naturally resembles animal ivory. The seeds, wrapped in a large pineapple-shaped cluster, fall naturally from the palm tree.
Once the seed is dry, it becomes very solid, and that's when it's worked. Sanded, painted, drilled, carved, or left in its natural state, the corozo seed has multiple uses. For decades, it has been used by Native Americans to make buttons and even some utensils.
Vegetable ivory beads, seeds, and buttons offer designers the same characteristics as animal ivory (texture, strength, smooth feel) while respecting nature. Corozo is a genuine alternative to using animal ivory.
The markers are approximately 8 cm high with the hook.
Lever hook (can be opened and removed at any time). Set of 11 handmade knitting or crochet markers in stone and vegetable ivory.
